World Economic Forum Focuses on Asian Leadership and Collaboration

On Sunday, June 12 Brian Gallagher, President and CEO of United Way Worldwide spoke at the World Economic Forum on East Asia in Jakarta, Indonesia about the importance of collaboration in advancing the common good. Every person, organization and country has unique skills and points of view that should be brought into solutions oriented discussions, regularly.

Even in the face of disagreement on certain issues, nations can work together on other issues where they have agreement. Everyone understands education, income and health are the building blocks of a good quality of life, and working together to make positive advances on these social issues builds trust and partnership.

In the case of Asia the development of a regional voice is crucial to managing global disruptions. The Asian Voice needs to be heard more loudly and clearly. Whether it’s in relation to the global financial economic crisis, unrest in Egypt and Iraq or in relation to natural disasters the experience and skills that Asia has must be brought into the discussion regularly. The European and other regional voices are heard frequently, while the Asian Voice is considered too infrequently.

Everyone has a role to play, and Asia’s leadership will be crucial in future global economic and social discussions.
